Maq Beerhall

Following the renovation of the Maq Hotel, the client sought to transform the existing ballroom into a vibrant onsite beerhall and restaurant. The design vision called for a darker, moodier palette grounded in local wood, while also meeting stringent fire separation requirements. Shou Sugi Ban siding emerged as the natural solution—its charred finish not only satisfied flame-spread ratings but also delivered the deep, textural wood tones the client desired.

To balance the richness of the Shou Sugi Ban, the interior was layered with lighter elements: pickled white wood, soft grey ceramic tile, polished concrete floors, and subtle brass accents. The furniture selection reinforces the communal spirit of the space, with expansive harvest tables anchoring the room and evoking the convivial atmosphere of a traditional beerhall. The result is a striking interplay of contrast—dark and light, rustic and refined—crafted to create both intimacy and energy within the reimagined ballroom.
